Chepe es is an illustrator and artist from State of Mexico. In 2017, he was selected as Latin American Young Talent in Lima, Peru. He’s worked on projects like Google Station and Ciudad Mural. His works transmits love for nature and everyday life, as well as it reflects a particular way of view the world, a background covered by learnings and inspirations. This time we have talked with Chepe about his inspirations, his creative process, amongst other things.
Acompañados de un par de cervezas bien frías y bajo el clamor de un poco de trap, Chepe nos cuenta de su visión de la vida, entre algunas otras historias alrededor de su arte. Chepe es artista e ilustrador originario del Estado de México, fue seleccionado en 2017 como Latin American Young Talent en Lima, Perú. Ha trabajado en proyectos tales como Google Station y Ciudad Mural, entre otros. Sus obras transmiten amor por la naturaleza y la cotidianidad que refleja su manera de ver el mundo, así como un trasfondo lleno de aprendizajes e inspiraciones.
Gabriel: Cuéntanos, ¿cómo es que empezó tu proyecto?
Chepe: Recuerdo que antes en la Ciudad de México había varios eventos culturales gratuitos. Fue justo buscando que encontré muchos talleres, pláticas y conferencias de arte, de ilustración, que me ayudaron a aprender un montón de cosas. Tuve la oportunidad de tener un taller gratuito y que Richard Zelda revisara mi portafolio. Ese fue un acercamiento muy importante y personal para mí. Todo comenzó con una Wacom, tratando de sacar las ideas que tenía para plasmarlas en una imagen.
G: Tell us, how did your project start?
C: Years ago, I remember in Mexico City there were several cultural events which was free. It was just when I looked for these cultural events that I found a lot of workshops, conferences and chats about art, illustration, among others. It helped me so much. Richard Zelda checked my portfolio in a free workshop I went. That approach was too significant and personal to me. Everything begun a Wacom with, trying to pour some ideas I had in mind to capture an image..
Gabriel: Usualmente haces énfasis en el dibujar para uno mismo. ¿Podrías platicarnos más al respecto?
Chepe: Creo que siempre ha sido así. Una de mis preocupaciones fundamentales ha sido, en principio, que me guste lo que yo hago. Es chistoso porque a veces trabajo en una obra que espero tenga un gran impacto, pero muchas veces son aquellas ideas que salen de la nada las que pegan más. No me importa lo que piensen, en realidad.
G: Sometimes you make emphasis in draw to yourself. Do you tell us more about it?
C: I think It’s always that; you know. One of my fundamental concerns has been, in a way, I have to enjoy what I do. It is funny because sometimes I’m working in a piece, I hope it’s amazing with a great impact, but most of the times these ideas which emerging by empty are more attractive. It does not matter for me, really.
Gabriel: ¿Cómo describirías tu proceso creativo? ¿Cómo llega la idea?
Chepe: Algunas veces las ideas llegan solas, pero muchas otras llegan trabajando. Últimamente es así. Con un objetivo me quedo trabajando hasta que consiga plasmar la idea requerida o aquello que quiero transmitir.
How do you describe your creative process? How are the ideas emerging?
Usually ideas surfacing by them. However, others have emerged while I am working. Lately, it’s in that way. With an objective I work until I get express the idea required or something I want to transmit.
G: ¿De dónde sale tu inspiración?
C: Creo que últimamente mi trabajo se encuentra en contraposición con todo lo que puedo representar. Últimamente lo que me interesa es el contraste y los colores a partir de una iluminación cromática, con tres o cuatro de ellos para generar una pieza. Ya experimenté con más colores. Ahora me gusta jugar con formas, áreas a las que pueda otorgar valor.
Where is your inspiration from?
I guess my work is recently in contrast with everything I can represent or draw. Lately, I’m interested in contrast, the colours from a chromatic lighting. Three or four of them I could build a piece. I’ve been experimented more colours with. I actually like playing with forms, areas where I would give meaning.
G: En ese sentido, ¿cómo se desenvuelve tu proyecto creativo?
C: Pues, yo llego a vomitarle al papel y a la computadora. Yo creo que la mente es una cosa dinámica, cuando tengo una idea, está conceptualizada en mi mente y no está estática, está mutando dentro de mi cabeza, por eso saco el concepto y luego lo detallo.
In this way, how do your process creative get on?
I mean I throw up onto the papers and computer. I think mind is a dynamic thing. When I had an idea, it is conceptualized by my imagination and it is not static, it’s mutating inside my mind. Because of that I get concept and then I detail.
G: ¿Escuchas música para trabajar? ¿Qué artistas nos recomiendas?
C: Si, siempre. Los Espiritus y King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
G: Do you listen to music while working?
C: Yeah. Always I do. Los Espiritus and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
G: Ya que trabajas en muchas dimensiones, desde el cuaderno hasta el mural. Queríamos saber si el tamaño del lienzo influye en su poder.
C: Pues, sí que influye. Pero, es algo muy chistoso también. Lo que me pasa es que cuando estoy haciendo un mural, no tengo miedo a manchar y a atacar la pared, mientras que en piezas pequeñas o en el papel, tengo mucho más cuidado, con temor de que la vaya a cagar.

C: En primer lugar, los dueños de la casa donde pertenece el muro deben tomarse en consideración. Sobre todo, a la hora del diseño. A partir de sus historias o significados, que son importantes para ellos, es de donde sale el material para trabajar. Aunque hay ocasiones excepcionales. Curiosamente en Mexicali me tocó una pared sin dueño. Ha sido el mural más grande que he pintado y la temática fue libre. Allí pinté a una morra con una valla fronteriza en el rostro y otras cosas fumadas del momento.
You work in many formats and dimensions, from notebook to mural. We want to know if size canvas is important and how affect the idea.
I guess of course that it has influence. But, it’s too funny. The thing I think is happened to me when I was painting a mural is that I had no fear, I attack and get dirty the wall. However, when I work on small pieces or paper, I try to be very careful. I’m afraid I’d fuck up.
How is the painting mural experience?
In first place, house’s owners where walls belong to should be considered. Mainly, at designing. As from their stories and meanings, which are too relevant, appear is where material for work is emerging. Although there are uncommon cases. Curiously in Mexicali I was fortunate to paint a wall without proprietor. It has been the bigger mural I painted and it has been free thematic. There I painted a girl with a frontier fences in her face and other mad things I thought at the moment.
G: Si tuvieras que elegir entre pintar una puerta o un picaporte, ¿qué pintarías?
C: Pienso que la puerta en un muro grande.
G: If you have to choose between painting a door or painting a latch, what do you paint?
C: I think I’ll paint a door in a big wall.
G: ¿Qué tienes en mente para el futuro?
C: Me gustaría aprender más técnicas de pintura. Me latería aprender sobre óleos, colores pastel, acuarelas, etcétera. También sacarles más provecho a las herramientas digitales. Pero, quien sabe. Justo estoy ahora trabajando en la creación de ilustraciones para una empresa americana. Es una guía ilustrada para generar una hipoteca. Yo sólo ilustro ciertas actividades.
G: ¿Te gustaría colaborar con alguien?
C: Me encantaría un montón armarle un póster o artwork a una banda que me guste mucho. Mínimo que haya una conexión entre la banda y yo.
What do you in mind for future?
I want to learn more paintings technics. I wonder learning about oils, pastel colours, watercolour, etcetera. I also want to take advantage of digital tools. But I don’t know. I am working now on illustrations for American company. It’s about an illustrated guide to generate a mortgage. I just illustrate some activities.
Would you like to collaborate someone with?
I’d like to create a poster or artwork for a band I love at least exist a main connection between the band and me.
G: Por último, ¿cómo definirías a Chepe?
C: Yo creo que es un bato al que le gusta dibujar. Al menos creo que es la cosa que no odia. Siempre se la pasa bien. Está preocupado por el medio ambiente. Siente que nuestros hábitos de consumo destruyen al planeta.
G: Finally, how do you define Chepe’s?
C: I think he’s a man who likes drawing. I guess it is the thing that he doesn’t hate. He’s always enjoying it. Although, he is worried about environment. He feels our consume habits are destroying the world.
