Teresita or Teresarte, well-known by her user on Instagram, is a 21-year-old artist who shoots portraits in experimental photography with a sober and phlegmatic style we discovered on that social network. The peculiarity of color tones in her posts and the melancholy she transmits makes us question how the process of her work is, as well as the beginnings of an artist with potential, which we commonly overlook in everyday life. To find out the birth and metamorphosis of this artist, we ask her questions based on how little or how much we can perceive with her photos, and thus discover the elements that also make her up as a person.
Teresita o Teresarte, conocida así por su username de Instagram, es una artista de veintiún años quien realiza retratos en fotografía experimental con un estilo sobrio y flemático. La particularidad de tonos en sus publicaciones y la melancolía que transmite nos hace cuestionarnos cómo es el proceso de su trabajo, así como los inicios de una artista potencial que comúnmente pasamos por alto. Justamente la descubrimos en aquella red social.
Ana Pao: Cuéntanos sobre Teresarte, ¿quién es? ¿Se considera una artista por su trabajo de fotografía o hace otro tipo de proyectos?
Teresarte: Creo que sí me considero artista por mi trabajo fotográfico. Pero, ¿sabes? Creo que influyó mucho que desde muy pequeña mis papás me metieron a clases de pintura y violín y fui creciendo con arte en mi vida. Estoy totalmente agradecida por ello. También estuve en una orquesta comunitaria a los 14 años tocando el fagot, por ello después decidí estudiarlo profesionalmente, pero por situaciones ajenas a mí no pude terminar, pero estoy también estoy agradecida por ello, porque si eso no hubiese pasado creo que nunca hubiera llegado a ser quien soy ahora. Una fotógrafa.
Ana Pao: ¿Qué es una fotografía para ti?
Teresarte: Es capturar el momento para volverlo recuerdo.
A: Tell us about Teresarte, who is she? Teresarte is considered an artist because
of her photography work or do you do other types of projects?
T: I think I do consider myself an artist for my photographic work. But you know? I think it influenced a lot that from a very young age my parents hooked me into painting and violin classes and I grew up with art in my life… I am totally grateful for it. I was also in a community orchestra at the age of 14 playing the bassoon, that’s why I decided to study it professionally afterwards, but due to situations beyond my control I couldn’t finish … but I am also grateful for it, because if that hadn’t happened I think I would never I would have become who I am now. A photographer.
A: What is a photograph for you?
T: It is capturing the moment to develop a memory.
AP: ¿Consideras que Teresita [tú] es la misma que Teresarte [artista]?
T: En definitiva, Teresarte y Teresita somos las mismas… Me gusta transmitir lo que siento y creo que el estilo de mis fotos se identifica básicamente en los colores que uso para representar mis emociones.
A: Do you consider that Teresita [you] is the same as Teresarte [artist]?
T: In short, Teresarte and Teresita are the same … I like to convey what I feel and I think the style of my photos is basically identified in the colors I use to represent my emotions.
A: Is there any kind of ritual or steps you follow before taking a photo to convey that essence of what do you speak?
T: Before taking a self-portrait, I go into my own aura to try to connect my emotions with the message I want to convey … but when I collaborate with other people, the process is somewhat different, because I try to get the other person to connect with me and let their energy flow. to capture that vicarious essence. I also like to prepare a playlist according to the type of photo I am going to take and listen to them before (the shoot), it still depends on the moment because sometimes I like to work in silence and enjoy only the moment.
AP: ¿Hay algún tipo de ritual o pasos que haces antes de tomar una foto para trasmitir esa esencia de la que hablas?
T: Antes de tomarme autorretrato entro como en mi propia aura para intentar conectar mis emociones con el mensaje que quiero transmitir… pero cuando colaboro con otras personas el proceso es un tanto distinto, porque procuro que la otra persona conecte conmigo y deje fluir su energía para capturar esa esencia ajena. También me gusta preparar playlists de acuerdo al tipo de foto que voy a realizar y escucharlas antes. Igual depende del momento porque a veces me gusta trabajar en silencio y disfrutar sólo el momento.
AP: Tus trabajos son retratos, ¿eso es lo que te piden, lo que te gusta hacer o sólo prefieres ese género?
T: Es lo que más me gusta hacer a mí y la mayoría de las personas con las que colaboro apoyan esa idea así que…
A: Your works are portraits … is that what they ask you, what you like to do or do you just prefer that genre?
T: It’s what I like to do the most and most of the people I collaborate with support that idea so …
AP: ¿Crees que en el mundo de la fotografía es difícil sobresalir por ser mujer o tener tu edad?
T: Creo tristemente que aún es difícil sobresalir en el mundo de la fotografía por ser joven y mujer y que todavía se desvaloriza la obra por eso, porque la mayoría de las personas adultas no tienen fe en nosotras, creen que simplemente es un pasatiempo y por supuesto que va más que eso… Las mujeres no sólo debemos ser objeto para el arte, también sustantivo.
A: Do you think that in the photography world it is difficult to stand out for being a woman or being your age?
T: I sadly think that it is still difficult to excel in the world of photography because of being young and female and that the work is still devalued for that reason, because most adults do not have faith in us, they believe that it is simply a hobby and of course that goes beyond that… Women should not only be objects for art, but also substantive.
AP: En la actualidad la mayoría tenemos un celular con el que se pueden hacer fotos y de manera personal hacer retratos. ¿Crees que eso es bueno para artistas como tú?
T: Creo que depende de cómo lo vea cada quien, por mi parte creo que es una herramienta demasiado útil. Creo que para crear una obra no importa el material, si no la esencia, la creatividad y la imaginación de cada quién, podemos aprovechar esta herramienta para dar frutos. Yo en alguna época no tuve mi cámara y tomé unas fotos ¡increíbles! Incluso me gustan un poco más que otras que si tomé con cámara.
A: Currently most of us have a cell phone with which we can take photos and personally make portraits … Do you think that’s good for artists like you?
T: I think it depends on how everyone sees it, from my experience I think it is a really useful tool. I believe that to create a work, material does not matter, but the essence, creativity and imagination of each person, we can take advantage of this tool to bear fruit. At one time I did not have my camera and I took some incredible photos! I even like them a little more than others than if I took a camera.
AP: ¿Tienes alguna sesión muy memorable para ti?
T: ¡Si! retraté a una amiga aquí en Zacatecas, en el Cerro de la Bufa, e inconscientemente conté una historia con las fotos y creo que es mi serie de fotos favoritas hasta ahora. El resultado siempre me tranquiliza y cada que las veo me transporto a la historia que conté con ellas.
A: Do you have a very memorable session for you?
T: Yes! I portrayed a friend here in Zacatecas, in Cerro de la Bufa, and unconsciously told a story with the photos and I think it is my favorite series of photos so far … The result always reassures me and every time I see them, I am transported to the story I told them.
AP: ¿Has expuesto alguna vez tu trabajo? Si no es así, ¿cómo le llamarías a tu primera exposición? ¿Cuál sería la frase que definiría tu galería fotográfica?
T: Por fortuna sí he logrado exponer mi trabajo, pero nunca he tenido la oportunidad de nombrar mi propia exposición. Aunque creo que sería como La energía del ser o algo así, porque puede que esté loca, [ríe] pero yo en verdad siento la energía de los demás y eso es lo que siempre he querido representar en mis fotos.
A: Have you ever exhibited your work? How do you name it? Maybe yoy would imagine a quote which defines your work.
T: Fortunately, I’ve managed to exhibit my work, but I have never had the opportunity to name my own exhibition. Although I think it would be like The energy of being or something like that, because it might be crazy, [laughs] but I really feel the energy of others and that’s what I’ve always wanted to represent in my photos.
AP: Por último, ¿hay algún artista que te inspire actualmente o del que te sientas influenciada?
T: Admiro desde siempre el trabajo de mi cine-fotógrafo favorito Emmanuel Lubezki y sinceramente espero algún día llegar a ser tan buena en este género como él…
A: Finally, is there an artist that is currently inspiring you or that you feel Influenced?
T: I always have admired the work of my favorite film-photographer Emmanuel Lubezki and I sincerely hope someday to become as good at this genre as he is …
