[This is a new way of interviwing that is intended to provide us with quantitative or qualitative elements of the artist’s creative process].
A few days ago we had the pleasure of chatting with Pessccado, a young man originally from Mexico City who currently resides in Cancun, Quintana Roo, a creator of narratives who has dedicated his brushstrokes to the unconscious with one eye on paper and the other on school or the office.His name was born as a game, but little by little he began to feel so identified with this peculiar species that he began to see them and dream of them everywhere to the point of feeling fascinated by them, feeling a love-hate ambivalence for the sea. Below, we show a methodological guide in collaboration with Pessccado to reinvent himself every time the heart demands, between melodies and the bowels of our reality:
Hace unos días tuvimos el placer de charlar con Pessccado, un joven originario de la Ciudad de México; creador de narrativas que ha dedicado su trazo al inconsciente con un ojo en el papel y el otro en la escuela o la oficina. Su nombre nació como un juego, pero poco a poco comenzó a sentirse tan identificado con esta especie tan peculiar que comenzó a verlos y soñarlos por todos lados, al grado de sentirse fascinado por ellos, sintiendo una ambivalencia amor–odio por el mar.
A continuación, mostramos una guía metodológica en colaboración con Pessccado para reinventarse cada que el corazón dicta, entre melodías y las entrañas de nuestra realidad. Esta nueva forma de entrevista-conversación busca desmenuzar el proceso de su obra.
1. Abstracción
Una vez dispuesto en la quietud, nos damos cuenta de que la realidad es poco expresiva. Para esta lección se recomienda bajar una lluvia de ideas que necesiten ser contadas de una u otra forma, usar los ratos libres cuando tu jefe no se encuentra en la oficina para experimentar. Reverberar las frases que te hagan ruido en la cabeza para culminarlas en el papel.
La fórmula es: palabras/frases + reverberación = abstracción.
1. Abstraction
Once disposed in stillness, we realize that reality is not very expressive. For this lesson it is recommended to brainstorm ideas that need to be told in one way or another, use the free time when your boss is not in the office to experiment. Reverberate the sentences that make noise in your head to culminate them on paper.
The formula is: words/phrases + reverberation = abstraction.
2. Catarsis
Si algún día te encuentras en un bloqueo mental o creativo, utiliza la fugacidad de la ira, de la tristeza, de la felicidad, en resumen: entra en catarsis.
No lo pienses, no te detengas, cambia de estilo si es necesario, pasa de lo abstracto a lo figurativo [¿o viceversa?], experimenta por primera vez el vivir en una época a la que nunca perteneciste, vuélvete pasado, vuélvete futuro o simplemente vuélvete por primera vez a tu presente.
La fórmula es: (emociones + hartazgo) / bloqueo = catarsis.
2. Catharsis
If one day you find yourself in a mental or creative block, use the transience of anger, sadness, happiness, in short: enter catharsis.
Don’t think about it, don’t stop, change your style if necessary, go from the abstract to the figurative [or vice versa?], experience for the first time living in a time you never belonged to, become the past, become the future or simply become your present for the first time.
The formula is: (emotions + weariness) / blockage = catharsis.
3. Reinterpretación
Rechazo total al estudio clásico anatómico, una necesidad inherente de transformar al cuerpo y transformar la mente.
Estudia cubismo, dadaísmo, futurismo o el movimiento de vanguardia filosófica, literaria o artística que te plazca, adéntrate en la composición, en las texturas, en las formas emergiendo de otras formas (como Borges y su fascinación por los laberintos).
La fórmula es: experimentación + análisis + viaje en el tiempo = reinterpretación.
3. Reinterpretation
Total rejection of classical anatomical study, an inherent need to transform the body and transform the mind.
Study cubism, dadaism, futurism or whatever philosophical, literary or artistic avant-garde movement you please, delve into composition, textures, forms emerging from other forms (like Borges and his fascination with labyrinths).
The formula is: experimentation + analysis + time travel = reinterpretation.
4. Gánate la vida honradamente
Trabaja. Que nada te detenga. Repite. Ya verás cómo surge el interés ajeno.
Te invitan a exponer obra junto a otros artistas, el día de la inauguración es un éxito, un colega que poco o nada tiene que ver con el mundo del arte visitó el sitio y está interesado en adquirir tu obra.
No te asustes, respira hondo.
No sabes si la quiere para su sala, para su novia o para su intimidad, pero insiste en que la quiere, procedes a cobrar y él procede a pagar. Sientes por primera vez la sensación de perder un hijo por algo tan burdo como unos pesos mexicanos (y te encanta). A partir de ese día aprendes a cobrar mejor por una pieza selecta, única e irrepetible.
Cobrar por una experiencia sensorial.
La fórmula es: trabajar en tu arte + aprovechar la oportunidad^2 + mentalidad, ¿de tiburón? = ganarte la vida honradamente.
4. Earn an honest living.
Work. Let nothing stop you. Repeat. You will see how the interest of other influences arises. You are invited to exhibit your work with other artists, the opening day is a success, a colleague who has little or nothing to do with the art world visited the site and is interested in acquiring your work. Don’t panic, take a deep breath.
You don’t know if he wants it for his living room, for his girlfriend or for his privacy, but he insists he wants it, you proceed to collect and he proceeds to pay. You feel for the first time the sensation of losing a child for something as crass as a few Mexican pesos (and you love it). From that day on you learn to charge better for a select, unique and unrepeatable piece. Charge for a sensory experience.
The formula is: work on your art + seize the opportunity^2 + shark mentality = make an honest living.
5. Surfea la pandemia
No es una moda, sólo es lo de hoy.
Reinventarse y adaptarse; escanear obra tradicional ya no es viable, ahora no sólo es costoso sino peligroso.
Encuentras en el mundo digital una nueva forma de expresión: dibujo digital.
Recuerdas la experiencia surreal de tomar un pincel por primera vez (en Photoshop). Decides darle un giro a tu gusto por una época específica, digamos la medieval, ahora el barroco se adapta una vez más a los sentidos humanos a través del pixel.
La fórmula es: virus letal + reinventarse + adaptarse = surfear la pandemia.
5. Surf the pandemic
It’s not a trend, it’s just today’s thing. Reinvent yourself and adapt; scanning traditional work is no longer viable, now it is not only expensive but dangerous. You find in the digital world a new form of expression: digital drawing. You remember the surreal experience of taking a brush for the first time (in Photoshop). You decide to give a twist to your taste for a specific era, let’s say medieval, now baroque is once again adapted to the human senses through the pixel.
The formula is: lethal virus + reinvent yourself + adapt = surf the pandemic.
6. Juego de palabras
Darte un descanso, en el sentido técnico, jugar con tus amigas de siempre: las palabras.
Combinar dos palabras y crear algo nuevo a partir de su disonancia, generar ideas a pesar de la falta de inspiración.
Como aficionado del lenguaje, decides inventarte un abecedario sinsentido con la única intención de armonizar tu trabajo, juegas con caracteres japoneses para crear un lenguaje estético listo para acompañar tu trabajo.
La fórmula es: ことば + diversión = juego de palabras.
6. Wordplay
Give yourself a break, in the technical sense, play with your usual friends: words. Combine two words and create something new from their dissonance, generate ideas despite the lack of inspiration. As a language aficionado, you decide to invent a nonsense alphabet with the sole intention of harmonizing your work, you play with Japanese characters to create an aesthetic language ready to accompany your work.
The formula is: ことば + fun = wordplay.
7. Sacar tu pasaporte musical
Recibir una comisión desde el otro lado del mundo, darte cuenta de que el sonido de la banda que te contrató congenia perfectamente con tu gráfica, el resultado de simplemente perfecto. El uno para el otro.
Quedar satisfechos acá y allá.
La fórmula es: notificación del otro lado del mundo + inspirarte en la música + catarsis = sacar tu pasaporte musical.
7. Get your musical passport
Receiving a commission from the other side of the world, realizing that the sound of the band that hired you fits perfectly with your graphic, the result is simply perfect. The one for the other. Satisfaction here and there.
The formula is: notification from the other side of the world + being inspired by the music + catharsis = getting your musical passport.
8. Crear nuevas narrativas
Comenzar a explorar las historias que puede contar la ilustración, dejar de lado el dibujo laxo y plano para adentrarse en las atmosferas de cada universo (dejar de construir en el aire).
Crear un nuevo formato, lleno de color, una nueva forma de transmitir emociones. Salirse del margen, romper los sesgos que imponen todos los puntos anteriores, sin olvidar lo aprendido.
La fórmula es: atmósfera + historia + salirse del margen = nuevas narrativas.
8. Create new narratives
Start exploring the stories that illustration can tell, leave aside the lax and flat drawing to enter into the atmospheres of each universe (stop building in the air). To create a new format, full of color, a new way of transmitting emotions. To break out of the margin, to shatter the biases imposed by all the previous points, without forgetting what has been learned.
The formula is: atmosphere + story + leaving the margin = new narratives.
9. Vivir la música
No escuchar la música. Vivirla.
Darte cuenta de que no concibes ni tu trabajo ni tu existencia sin música de fondo, adentrarte en los sonidos, en las letras, generar ideas a partir de su conexión con la mente.
Es 100% necesaria. Es vital.
Ser diverso contigo y tus oídos, escuchar black metal, progresivo, jazz, sonidero y cumbias rebajadas, por dar algunos ejemplos. Adentrarse en el ritmo, en la melodía, en la armonía, en las letras y en las atmosferas que todas en su conjunto crean.
La fórmula es: monitores + el volumen al tope + disfrutar = vivir la música.
9. Living the music
Don’t listen to the music. Live it. Realize that you can’t conceive your work or your existence without music in the background, get into the sounds, the lyrics, generate ideas from its connection with the mind. It is 100% necessary. It is vital.
Be diverse with yourself and your ears, listen to black metal, progressive, jazz, sonidero and disco cumbias, to give some examples. Get into the rhythm, the melody, the harmony, the lyrics and the atmospheres that all together create.
The formula is: monitors + volume up + enjoy = live the music.
