Chaz is a Texas-based musician who has been in Austin’s psychedelic music scene after moved to the city in 2011. He debuted his songs live at SXSW 2019, introducing his project for the first time with a vibrant psychedelic-pop sound inspired in the 70’s. Dorio just released his debut album last March, 27th. Yesterday The Sky Was Blue, which was recorded and mixed on 2018 and 2019, with ten tracks surrounded by colours all over its tones. We also have the pleasure to have Rachel Rascoe, a freelance musician and artist based in Austin, who has helped in the art and production of the album.
Dorio acaba de lanzar su álbum debut el pasado 27 de marzo. Yesterday The Sky Was Blue se grabó y mezclo entre 2018 y 2019, con diez pistas rodeadas de colores en todos sus tonos. Hemos tenido el placer con Rachel Rascoe y Chaz, de Austin, Texas. Rachel ha ayudado en el arte y producción del álbum y es integrante de la banda en vivo. Chaz, es músico, debutó en vivo en el SXSW 2019, donde introdujo su vibrante sonido pop psicodélico inspirado en los 70s.
Gabriel: ¿Cómo es que llegaste a Austin?
Chaz: Nací en Bryan, Texas, pero después de terminar la preparatoria pensé que era el mejor lugar para mudarme. Así que me mudé allí. Estaba aprendiendo música en la escuela y fue una de las principales razones por las que me mudé a Austin.
G: How did you end up in Austin?
Chaz: I was born in Bryan, Texas, but after finishing high school I thought
it was the coolest spot to move so I moved there. I was perusing music in high
school and it was one of the main reasons I moved to Austin.
Gabriel: ¿Puedes contarme un poco sobre cómo empezó el proyecto de Dorio?
Chaz: Claro. Comenzó con un par de canciones en 2018, sin tener idea de lo que iba a ser. Ni siquiera tenía el concepto de Dorio.
G: Can you tell me a little bit about how the project
began?
Chaz: Yeah. It kinda started with a couple of songs on 2018 with no idea of what was it gonna be. I didn’t even have the concept of Dorio.
Gabriel: ¿Y qué me puedes decir sobre el álbum debut Yesterday The Sky Was Blue?
Chaz: Creo que tiene una especie de canciones antiguas de los años 70 y 80s porque esa es la mayoría de música que suelo escuchar. Soy un gran fan de la música de Todd Rundgren. Deberían escucharla.
And what can you tell me about the debut album Yesterday The Sky Was Blue?
Chaz: I think it has a sort of 70’s and 80’s vintage songs because that’s the majority of music I usually listen, like I’m a real big fan of Todd Rundgren, better check him up, is really cool!
Gabriel: ¿Cómo se concibe el arte de Dorio? ¿Por dónde?
Rachel: Bueno, Chaz siempre está haciendo estos divertidos dibujos casi como figuras de palo, y tenía un poco de experiencia en el diseño gráfico debido a algunas cosas de periodista en las que solía trabajar, así que se convirtió en la idea. En realidad, la planta en la portada la compramos en una tienda en San Antonio y se convirtió en su inspiración visual para el álbum. Así como para las portadas de otros álbumes setenteros que tenemos en casa.
Chaz: Creo que el concepto del arte surgió con la portada. Fue agradable trabajarlo porque es algo realmente colaborativo. Algo que al final se vuelve realidad. Creo que el arte, y especialmente la portada del álbum, era exactamente lo que estaba buscando.
G: I wanted to know how it was conceiving the art of Dorio?
Rachel: Well, Chaz is always doing these hilarious drawings almost like stick figures and I had a little bit of background in graphic design because of some journalist stuff I used to work on, so that turned into the idea. Actually, the plant in the cover, we bought it from a store in San Antonio and it became his visual inspiration for the album as well as others 70’s album covers at the house.
Chaz: I think the artwork concept came up with the cover, is was nice working in the artwork ‘cause it is really collaborative thing that finally comes true. I think the artwork and specially album cover was exactly what I was looking for.
Gabriel: Me preguntaba, ¿cómo es el proceso creativo para hacer una canción para Dorio?
Chaz: Una canción me llega al azar mientras no pienso en escribir música, y luego una melodía o alguna letra aparece en mi cabeza. Entonces grabo una nota de voz. Tengo muchas de esas y generalmente se convierten en canciones. También tengo un estudio casero donde grabo demos, mismos que eventualmente se convierten en pistas.
G: I was wondering, what’s it like the creative process of making a song for Dorio?
Chaz: A song comes to me randomly while I’m not thinking about writing music, and then a melody or some lyrics pop into my head so I record a voice memo. I got a lot of those and they usually become songs. I also have a home studio where I record demos that eventually get to be tracks.
Gabriel: ¿Podrías explicarnos como la participación de Hugh Vu, Jake Moon y Daniel McNeil se relaciona o afecta el sonido? Ellos se encargan de la batería, teclados y mezcla para el álbum, ¿no?
Chaz: El álbum tiene 10 canciones, pero siento que cada canción tiene su propia esencia. Se grabó 10 Years con Rachel en la voz. Yo toqué y mezclé todo. Jake Moon ayudó en otras canciones como The Tale of Far West Texas y Jeremiah’s Garden; y Hugh Vu hizo un montón de batería y Daniel ayudó a mezclar otras canciones. De hecho, la banda en vivo está formada por un grupo cercano de amigos porque quería que fuera lo más divertido posible.

G: Can you explain how the participation of Hugh Vu, Jake Moon and Daniel McNeil affects the sound? (Drums, Keyboards and Mixer for the album).
Chaz: The album is 10 songs but I feel each song has its own thing. 10 years was recorded with Rachel on the vocals, I played and mixed everything. Jake Moon helped in other songs like The Tale of Far West Texas and Jeremiah’s Garden, and Hugh Vi did a ton of drums and Daniel helped mixing other songs. In fact, the live band is shaped by a really close group of friends because I wanted it to be as fun as possible.
Rachel: Some of those people are guys who Chaz just met when he arrived there.

Chaz: Creo que 10 Years es esa canción sólo porque definí como quería que fuera mi sonido. Diría que Shortcuts es mi otra favorita. [Curiosamente son las dos canciones más escuchadas en Spotify]
G: Do you have a favourite song of the album?
Chaz: I think 10 years is that song just because I defined how I wanted my sound to be, then I would say Shortcuts is my other favourite. [These are in fact the two most listened songs on Spotify].
Gabriel: ¿Te gustaría compartirnos algunas recomendaciones musicales?
Chaz: Si. Realmente he estado escuchando mucho a Shintaro Sakamoto en los últimos años, siendo una de mis mayores influencias. De hecho, cada dos semanas, Shintaro publica una playlist en Spotify. Ahí es dónde he encontrado bastante música. Creo que se llama Flag Radio. ¡Definitivamente dale un vistazo! También creemos que nuestro lanzamiento favorito en Austin es Why Bonnie. G: Would you like to share some music recommendations?
Chaz: Yeah. I’ve really been listening a lot of Shintaro Sakamoto the last years, being one of my biggest influences. In fact, every two weeks Shintaro posts a playlist on Spotify. That’s were we have found lots of music. I think it is called Flag Radio. Definitely check it up! We also think our favourite release in Austin is Why Bonnie, they are some friends who just put out now a new EP. You should check them out too.
Gabriel: ¿Cuáles son los nuevos planes para Dorio?
Chaz: Justo ahora he estado trabajando en escribir nuevas letras e ideas para quizás nuevos lanzamientos, para el próximo disco.
G: What are you new plans for Dorio?
Chaz: Right now, I have been working on writing new lyrics and ideas for maybe new releases for the next record.

Rachel: I always say 10 things I hate about you. It’s kinda guilty pleasure.
Chaz: Apocalypse now. It is a big war movie
Gabriel: Si fuesen una droga, ¿cuál serían?
Rachel: Creo que la marihuana. No soy una persona extrema.
Chaz: Yo sería una microdosis de LSD.
G: If you could be a drug, which one would you be?
Rachel: I think weed. I am not an extreme person.
Chaz: I would be LSD microdose.
Gabriel: Si pudieran llevar tres objetos al espacio, ¿cuáles serían?
Rachel: Diría que un cuaderno de notas, un bolígrafo y mis ositos de goma.
Chaz: Llevaría mi cara sonriente, mi guitarra y a Rachel [ellos ríen].
G: If you could bring 3 objects to the space, what would it be?
Rachel: I would say a notebook, a pen and my gummy bears.
Chaz: I would bring my smiley face pot, mi guitar and Rachel [They laugh].
Gabriel: ¿Cuál es su estación favorita del año?

G: What is your favourite season of the year?
Rachel: Spring. It is a shame. It’s about to end.
Chaz: Fall!
Gabriel: ¿Tienen algún consejo para la cuarentena?
Rachel: Creo que deberíamos ponernos en contacto con la comunidad, y tratar de seguir hablando con las personas.
Chaz: Hablando desde la perspectiva del artista, no presionarse demasiado. Creo que es importante cuidarse física y mentalmente, sobre todo. En conclusión, me gustaría animar a todos a dar una oportunidad al proyecto de Dorio. ¡Estamos tratando de ampliar los límites de la música que existen alrededor del mundo!
G: Do you have some advice for the pandemic?
Rachel: I guess we should get in touch with our community and try to keep talking to other people.
Chaz: Speaking from an artist perspective, don’t put some much pressure in yourself. I think is more important taking care of yourself physically and specially mentally. In conclusion, I would like to encourage everyone to give Dorio’s project a chance. We are trying to push further the music boundaries that exist around all kind of listeners!
